What Does 240 GSM Mean in a T-shirt?

Short answer: GSM means grams per square metre. A fabric described as 240 GSM has a mass of 240 grams for one square metre. It is a fabric-weight measurement, not a complete quality score.

This guide explains what the number can help you compare when shopping for a T-shirt, and what it cannot tell you on its own.

What does GSM measure?

Textile standards describe fabric weight as mass per unit area. A higher GSM number means there is more fabric mass in the same area. It does not identify the fibre content, yarn quality, knit construction, finish, stitching or print method.

That distinction matters: two T-shirts can share the same GSM and still feel or perform differently because their materials and construction are different.

What might a 240 GSM T-shirt feel like?

Compared with a lighter jersey made using similar fibres and construction, a 240 GSM fabric will usually feel more substantial in the hand. It may hold a more structured shape and may be less sheer. The final result still depends on the knit, finish, colour, cut and garment measurements.

Does a higher GSM automatically mean better quality?

No. Fabric weight is one useful specification, but it is not a verdict. A lighter T-shirt can be the better choice when low weight is the priority. A heavier T-shirt can suit someone who prefers a more substantial feel or a more structured silhouette.

Quality also depends on factors that GSM does not measure, including fibre composition, fabric construction, seams, finishing, print execution and how accurately the garment is made.

What should you check before buying a graphic T-shirt?

  • Fabric weight: Use GSM to compare how light or substantial the fabric is intended to be.
  • Verified material information: GSM does not tell you whether a fabric is cotton, a blend or another fibre.
  • Garment measurements: Compare the listed chest, length and shoulder measurements with a T-shirt you already own.
  • Front and back images: Check the actual artwork placement instead of relying on one campaign image.
  • Available variants: Confirm the colour, size and current stock shown on the product page.

Is 240 GSM suitable for a graphic T-shirt?

It can be a useful option when you want a more substantial base for the garment, but GSM alone cannot predict print quality or durability. Those depend on the fabric, print process, artwork coverage, curing, handling and care.

Will a 240 GSM T-shirt feel hot?

Fabric weight alone cannot answer that. Comfort changes with fibre content, knit, fit, airflow, humidity, weather and activity. Use GSM as one comparison point rather than treating it as a universal comfort rating.
